A Glimpse into Sonmarg: The Meadow of Gold

Located at the base of the Himalayan range in Jammu & Kashmir, Sonmarg translates to the “Meadow of Gold,” and it is truly a spectacular valley of green meadows, surrounded by mountains with white peaks and even the stunning silvery waters of the Sindh River.

More than a beautiful spot to visit, Sonmarg is a year-round playground for nature-lovers, adventure-seekers, and spiritual pilgrims. If you’re looking for a day trip from Srinagar or a jumping-off place for trekking at some high altitude, Sonmarg has plenty to offer.

Trek to the Thajiwas Glacier

Trekking in Sonamarg

Among the most famous experiences in Sonmarg is the hike to the Thajiwas Glacier, which is located about 3 km from the town. The glacier remains snow-covered even in the summer months and serves as an otherworldly icy getaway in a backdrop of green alpine meadows.

You can make the journey to the glacier on foot, which will take roughly 3–4 hours for the round-trip hike, or hire a pony for a more leisurely experience. You can enjoy snow-sledging (dependent on the season), take in the expansive views, or simply enjoy the stillness of the mountains while you are there.

Explore the Zoji La Pass and Zero Point

A breathtaking ride from Sonmarg will bring you to the Zoji La Pass, one of the highest and most awe-inspiring mountain passes located in the region. This pass is more than just a road; it is a symbol, a touchdown between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh, showcasing endless views of barren peaks and glaciers.

Zero Point, located beyond Zoji La, is at an elevation of about 4,500 meters. Here, you feel like you’re standing on the edge of the world, with mountains covered in snow and infinite emptiness surrounding you. Access is heavily dependent on weather, and you will want to plan this when visiting in the summer months, when the roads are open.

Join the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek

Hiking across Countryside

For hiking enthusiasts, Sonmarg is not only a place but the starting point of the famed Kashmir Great Lakes Trek. The trek takes 6-7 days and passes through alpine meadows, lofty mountain passes, and breathtaking glacial lakes.

Some of these lakes include Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, and Gangabal. Of these, Vishansar Lake, situated at around 3,710 meters, is perhaps the top sight; this pristine, oligotrophic lake stays frozen in winter, but during the summer it is a bright blue-green hue.

When trekking, you will also often pass over Nichnai Pass, where you’ll have sweeping views of the landscape, and the sense of remoteness is very real!

Visit Baltal Valley

Located about 15 km from Sonmarg, Baltal Valley is a quiet locale along the Sindh River. The most meaningful place for spiritual travellers, the annual Amarnath Yatra begins in Baltal, serving as the base camp for the journey.

Outside of the pilgrimage season, Baltal is a nice place to camp, picnic, and enjoy beautiful mountain scenery. The transportation to Baltal (on a pony or taxi) is a scenic experience through meadows and rivers.

White-Water Rafting on the Sindh River

Adrenaline seekers will have much to love in Sonmarg, with one of their top activities being white-water rafting on the Sindh River. The stretch of the river from Baltal to Shutkari Bridge features Grade II and III rapids, making it suitable for beginners and experienced rafters alike.

Rafting trips typically last 1 to 3 hours, depending on the stretch and season. The operators provide all equipment, and local guides lead the way, which makes it a fun, relatively safe way to experience the wild side of Sonmarg.

Go Fishing and Angling

If you’re seeking a more relaxed form of escapism, taking a fishing rod and heading to the cold, clear water of the Sindh River is always a great idea. The river has brown and rainbow trout, making this a very peaceful experience. Whether you are a seasoned fisherman or a novice, spending a relaxed afternoon beside the river is always good for the spirit.

One of the most delightful ways to appreciate Sonmarg’s terrain is on a pony or horse ride. Generally, the rides will lead you through a meadow or glacial paths or along the river. Along the way, you may be able to stop at a café or rest stop for local snacks and hot beverages.

You can hire ponies for the rides to the Thajiwas Glacier, Baltal Valley, and even to the high point heading up towards Zero Point (depending on the route and availability). It is a time-honoured, leisurely way to appreciate the landscape while having a pleasant, memorable ride.

Picnic or Camp on the Table-Top Plateau

The Table Top Plateau (which is called “Bear Valley” by some) is a serene and lesser-known part of Sonmarg. This plateau is a grassy plateau with great views and peaceful space to relax.

You may even see a bear if you are lucky (but a bear sighting is rare).  A picnic at this spot during the evening is magical with the soft grass and cool mountain air while gazing into the distant mountain range. For those who love adventure, overnight camping on the plateau under the stars will be a memorable experience.

Experience Local Village Life in Sarbal

Only a short distance from Sonmarg, the small village of Sarbal sits alongside the Sindh River, where you can spend time with the Gujjar-Bakarwal community in Kashmir, observe traditional Kashmiri life, and soak in the atmosphere of a river village.

As you walk around the village, you’ll see simple homes, livestock wandering in the fields, and meadows nestled in among mountain ridges. Sarbal is also a good place to take photographs, reflect quietly, and enjoy(in basic home-stays or guest houses) authentic Kashmiri-style food.

Skiing and Snow Activities in Winter

Skiing in the Soft Snow

If you come to Sonmarg during the winter, it will almost certainly be a snow-covered scene. In winter, skiing, sledging, and even some ice skating (on frozen patches) are rather common.

The best places for these Antarctic adventures are around Thajiwas Glacier and Zero Point. Rental gear (skis, sledges) may be available locally, especially during peak season. It’s best to call ahead! The fresh air, fresh powder, and quiet atmosphere make for a snow experience you won’t forget.

Enjoy the Strategic Marvel: Sonmarg Tunnel

The Sonmarg (Z-Morh) Tunnel, an innovative addition to the region’s structure, is a 6.5 km long road tunnel that now provides all climate connectivity to Sonmarg. It has greatly reduced travel time, made travel in winter easier and safer, and considerably enhanced tourism year-round. Driving through the tunnel is a contemporary engineering experience against nature’s enduring Himalayan backdrop.
